Current energy prices we use
The running cost calculators start from Ofgem’s price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026, the average for England, Scotland and Wales paying by Direct Debit. You can type in your own tariff instead.
| Fuel | Unit rate | Standing charge |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity | 26.32p per kWh | 54.83p a day |
| Gas | 7.97p per kWh | 29.68p a day |
Source: Ofgem, changes to the energy price cap between 1 October and 31 December 2026. Rates vary by region, and Northern Ireland isn’t covered by the cap. The cap changes on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, and we update these figures each time.
Gas work and electrics
Fitting or moving a boiler, gas fire or cooker must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Fitting a new circuit, such as for an EV charger, is notifiable electrical work under Part P in England and Wales, so use a registered electrician who can certify it.
